School and higher ed security involve many aspects of emergency management and education agency management, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), technology and cyber security, facilities management, law enforcement, and more. Maximizing the strength of an education agency’s security team and system is an important part of the work that emergency management teams do at the K-12 and higher ed levels to support state and local education agency responses during and after a hazard or threat occurs. As a part of their emergency operations plans (EOPs), education agencies can create Security Annexes that outline clear-cut protocols for the development of courses of action that schools and institutions of higher education (IHEs) will implement on a routine, ongoing basis to secure the education agency from hazards and/or threats.
